About
DOK16 is a neighbourhood workshop of the Municipal Library in Prague, which you can find in dungeon No. 16 on the Smíchov embankment. DOK16 is not a standard branch – you cannot borrow, return or reserve books here. Books are offered here in the form of „readers to readers“ or on the principle of bookstores. We also have a small collection of books on wood, so there will be plenty of reading anyway. Anyone is welcome to come and work on their own project. The workshop is for anyone who lacks their own tools, doesn't have enough space at home, or just wants to share the joy of creating with others. For example, come and join us to make a shelf, fix an old chair or bind your own notebook.
What we are currently doing at the branch
- Open workshops where you come in and leave with a simple product in minutes to hours.
- Shorter and longer classes where you learn specific techniques or make something more challenging.
- Lectures focusing (not only) on crafts and sustainable lifestyle.
- Community events, such as various gatherings, cultivating the dungeon and the surrounding area or SWAPs.
- Saturday and morning activities for families and seniors.
- Various cultural events. Like a concert, an improliga or an author reading.
- Looking for a place to hold a meeting for your club, or maybe make banners? Do you want to get together with friends or neighbours? Email us at dok16@mlp.cz and let's make arrangements.
How does it work?
- After training, you can use hand and power tools in our workshop. There are no limits to creativity, you just need to follow the rules of operation. We are especially equipped to work with wood, paper and books, and partly also to work with leather or metal. The loan of tools is free of charge for holders of a reader's card. You can reserve a workbench and tools in advance. You can either bring your own materials or buy them on site by prior arrangement (especially wood, screws, sandpaper and other small items).
How can I get involved?
- Lots of things will need „tightening the screws“, come and give us feedback.
- Do you have anything at home that you no longer need? Hand tools, used wood, old sewing machine, etc.? Bring it to us where someone will be happy to give it a second life. Just always think about whether it can really still be put to good use. If you're not sure, you'd better ask beforehand. We don't have a large storage area. We therefore reserve the right to refuse your treasures.
